Each species is positioned according to wing length data from AVONET, with the smallest species near the center and larger hummingbirds toward the edges. Colors are extracted from Wikipedia descriptions. This presented an interesting challenge: how do you capture iridescence through text? Descriptions like "metallic green" or "glittering ruby" had to be translated into color data. The result emphasizes greens—reflecting the emerald tones of many tropical hummingbirds—but includes the reds, purples, and bronzes that flash from throats and crowns.
